Eckington Active is 50!

A cornerstone of the community for half a century, the leisure centre has seen its fair few children, parents and grandparents through its doors over the years.

From swimming to gym and catching up over a cuppa in the café, the centre has helped the community and now the centre is giving back to you.

Starting on Monday 28th October, there will be a week of fun filled activities including:

  • Refurbished Gym to re-open on Monday 28th October with an official opening by Cllr Kathy Rouse on Friday 15th November at 1pm.
  • Café will be selling 50th themed sweet treats
  • Pool Parties as part of the October half term on Monday 28th & Wednesday 30th, 1.30-3pm with floats/rafts & inflatable balls
  • Mega Party Experience disco from the balcony on the above dates.
  • Membership promotion of 50% off ‘pro rata’ payment Monday 4-10 November
  • Photo display of Eckington over the years.

North East Derbyshire District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Cllr Kathy Rouse said: “What a fantastic milestone for our leisure centre, 50 years of serving our communities, helping them learn to swim, get fit and a space where everyone is welcome.

“Many of our residents have some fantastic memories from over the years and the old girl is looking good for her age after we have invested in green solar energy, reducing carbon emissions enormously and we have just finished a full gym refurbishment, she’s as good as new!”.

Health help on hand

A sciatica sufferer has praised our Exercise by Referral classes for helping her on the road to recovery.

Sheila Dungworth (75) from Holmesfield was referred onto the 12-week scheme by her physiotherapist after suffering from the condition, which can cause extreme pain in the bottom, backs of legs and feet.

After joining in with the low impact circuit classes and enjoying them so much, she now attends Dronfield Active once a week.

She has thanked our Healthy Lifestyles Instructor Georgia Limb for helping her to get moving again.

Sheila said: “It (the sciatica) has all gone now.

“I still had it when I started with Georgia, but the 12 weeks certainly helped and the whole experience was a lifting one.

“Georgia is very nice. The people are very nice there.”

Sheila praised the fun sessions, which take place to music and include activities such as a basketball challenge.

She added: “I haven’t done it before and I found I actually enjoyed it.

“It lifts you. You are not on your own. You are all wanting to get better.

“I’m feeling massively better.”

Georgia said: “I’m so pleased Sheila has benefitted from the scheme and is feeling better.

“It’s great to hear her physical symptoms have gone now, but she still enjoys exercising with us.”

To participate in the scheme, you must be aged 19+ and either make an appointment with your GP or complete the self-assessment tool on the Live Life Better Derbyshire website

Activities can include gym, swimming, low impact circuit training, cardiac rehabilitation, chair-based exercise and Forever Active. Other activities are available, but are chargeable at a pay-as-you-go-rate.

Clay Cross Active Update

Clay Cross Active Update: Last month, the main contractor for the Clay Cross Active development, ISG, filed for administration delaying progress on the project as a new contractor was sourced.

The council’s development partner, Alliance Leisure, have worked tirelessly to appoint a new contractor and minimise the impact on the scheme. The Council are delighted to announce that a new contractor Universal Civils & Build will take over the scheme.

You will start to see contractors returning to site in the coming weeks. Universal have already made the site secure & safe, and are currently rescheduling the works to ensure they can be completed as quickly as possible. Further updates will be provided in due course through our social media channels and our website.

Eckington Fitness Suite £182K Refurbishments

Exciting news for Just Do More members!

£182k investment in the Fitness Suite at Eckington Active to keep
North East Derbyshire residents active.
As part of our commitment to promoting a community with lifelong good health,
North-East Derbyshire District Council is injecting £182k into Eckington Active to
refurbish the Fitness Suite at the end of October 2024.
The Fitness Suite will be closed from Monday 14th October and re-open on Monday
28th October, during which time the décor and flooring will be refreshed and new
equipment installed. Members will see all new Pulse Fitness equipment with an
expanded free weight area, along with the addition of a functional area with an Indigo
Fitness rig. 3D images are available to view in the Fitness Suite giving an indication of
how it will look once the project is complete.
Members who attend Studio Cycle classes will be excited to hear that we are also
getting new Keiser UK bikes.
During the closure why not continue training at either Killamarsh Active or Dronfield
Active where your Just Do More membership is valid at all our sites.
If you want to continue exercising at Eckington while the Fitness Suite refurbishment
takes place, we will be adding free swimming in public & lane swimming sessions to
anyone who has gym use included in their membership.
Members not wishing to take advantage of these alternative options can contact
reception to freeze their membership for a period of one month.
Details of closures and what facilities will be available in the centres will be posted
onto the Council’s website www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk and within the facilities
themselves.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this refurbishment but are sure you
will agree the end result will be worthwhile
